Abstract

China's medical device industry is characterized by a large number of categories and relatively small market size for individual products (compared to pharmaceuticals). Currently, China's medical device industry can be mainly divided into three segments: medical device materials and systems, medical device design and manufacturing, and medical device product application.

With the increasing aging population and rising prevalence of chronic diseases, the demand for high-end medical devices is growing rapidly. The medical device industry is closely related to the physical health and safety of the people. Common medical devices include various instruments, equipment, and materials used for medical prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. They provide important material support for the modern medical system, disease prevention and control mechanism, public health security, and health service system. Under the guidance of national strategies and strong policy support, "Made in China 2025" and the "14th Five-Year Plan" list high-end medical equipment as a priority. The process of domestic substitution is accelerating, breakthroughs are continuously being made in core technologies and key components, and the innovation vitality of local enterprises is continuously bursting forth. As a strategic emerging industry, the medical device industry occupies an important position in national economy and people's livelihood, economic development, and national security.

China's medical device industry is characterized by a large number of product categories and relatively small single-product market size (compared to pharmaceuticals). Currently, China's medical device industry can be mainly divided into three segments: medical device materials and systems, medical device design and manufacturing, and medical device product applications.

China's medical devices can be broadly categorized into four types based on their nature: high-value consumables, low-value consumables, medical equipment, and in-vitro diagnostics (IVD). High-value consumables: These refer to key consumables implanted or introduced into the human body, with high technical barriers and strict risk control, concentrated in high-precision and sophisticated treatment scenarios such as cardiovascular, orthopedics, and neurosurgery. Typical examples include coronary stents, artificial joints, implantable pacemakers, and precision catheters and guidewires. Low-value consumables: As a basic clinical guarantee, these refer to large-volume, mostly disposable, routine medical supplies commonly used in injection, nursing, and surgical protection. Injection and infusion equipment, medical dressings (cotton swabs and gauze), examination gloves, and various drainage collection devices are its main components. Medical equipment: This covers instruments and systems used for disease diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation support, constituting the core assets of medical institutions. According to core functions, they can be further divided into: imaging diagnostic equipment (such as MRI, CT, ultrasound), life information monitoring equipment (such as electrocardiogram monitors), treatment equipment (such as surgical robots, laser therapy instruments), and rehabilitation aids. In-vitro diagnostics (IVD): Detection systems and services that provide key information for disease screening, diagnostic classification, efficacy evaluation, and health management through in-vitro analysis of human samples (blood, body fluids, tissues, etc.). Core products include biochemical analyzers, immunoassay systems, molecular diagnostic (PCR, NGS) platforms, blood analyzers, and their accompanying special reagents.
